Pub to park, Warialda’s Commercial hotel site will become a park. Gwydir Shire intends to purchase the Commercial Hotel and turn it into a recreational area. This was foreshadowed by Mayor Cr. John Coulton in a press release published by Gwydir News on July 15.

“The Council resolved unanimously to purchase property in Stephen Street, Warialda with the view to demolish the existing hotel and transform the large block into green space.”

He said that during consultations in 2017, the Warialda community had said it wanted more recreational areas.

Council’s General Manger explained the background to Bingara’s Magazine:

“The genesis of this decision is actually from the Mongard Consultations held some years ago. Originally the idea was to develop the police station house on the corner of Hope and Stephan Streets as a park and relocate the police station to the site of the Warialda Ambulance Station, which was being relocated to the Warialda MPS. Unfortunately the State Government didn’t support the request.”

The Commercial Hotel has been closed for quite awhile and according to Council, it will never be re-opened. The fear was that it would fall into disrepair.

Councillors approved the decision at this week’s monthly meeting.
