History talks in old newspaper articles. The Spicer Cup Team and other stories associated with Bingara

Coach Wally Greenlands was attracted to Bingara by the challenge of playing  Spicer Cup football. However, there is little doubt that the quality of the Bingara players would have also been a drawcard. For example, the champion squad included:  George Howson, ‘Bluey’ Robinson, Ron Reece, Eric Scutt, Jim Smith, Reg Sorby, Jack Wilson, Bill Reece, Vince McTaggart, Luke Armstrong, Cecil Quinlivan, Russell Anderson and Jack Armstrong – all household names in those days.

Unfortunately, I disagree with some of the information embedded in the photo titled, “Bingara’s winning Spicer Cup team, 1927 or 1928”

Firstly, Greenlands and Quinliven did not arrive in Bingara until 1932, secondly, Bingara was playing rugby union in 1927, switching to rugby league in 1928 and finally, Revel Ritter would have been far too young to play senior football in 1932. Additionally, Richard Scutt said his father Eric, was named as “Ron Reece” in the photo. Therefore, it seems that the names were added to the photo well after the event, and this has proven very difficult for research. In my opinion the photo is that of the 1932 Spicer Cup winners, and family members are invited to help correct the names of the players.
