McGregor Gourlay sponsored Golf Championships at Warialda.

The McGregor Gourlay sponsored Golf Par 3 Championships was the event played on Sunday. It is always exciting when there is a play-off in gross championships. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, a play-off between Warialda’s ‘young gun golfer’ Charlie Cush against club champion Rod Ireland couldn’t go ahead. It was decided on a count-back with both players having 61 off the stick, with Charlie being this year’s Par 3 Champion. In the A-grade nett event, the winner with 54 was Tom Kilner, and Geoff Phillips was the runner-up with 59.

In the B-grade division Mathew Williams, with a 67, won the gross event ahead of the in-form David Smith with a 69. The B-grade nett winner, Aaron Smith, had an incredible 48, beating Wayne Reading who’s score of 52 would usually win. The ball rundown went to John McDonald – 54, Kim Cleal – 56, Craig Lockhart – 57, Clem Gordon – 58 and the last two balls were won by Steve Power and Mark Smith, both on 59.

The nearest the pins went to Craig Lockhart on the third and the all-in fifth and Rod Ireland on the ninth.
The Par 3 Championships is always a popular event and this year was no different with a large field hitting off on Sunday. Special thanks to Mathew Williams and David Smith for setting up the course with the help of greenkeeper, Lenny.

This coming Sunday’s event is the first round of the Individual Matchplay, and in-conjuction, for those not playing matchplay, an Individual Stableford will be played. Those playing matchplay can also participate in the daily competition. Captain Shark would like to see as many matchplay games completed as possible on Sunday.
This week’s ‘some old, some new, but all funny and true!’ quote is from Californian politician George Deukmejian: “The difference in golf and government is that in golf you can’t improve your lie.”
