Did you know? Beyond Blue estimates that in Australia, 45% of people will experience a mental health condition in
their lifetime. But often mental health concerns don’t just begin in adulthood.
In fact, statistics show that over 75% of mental health issues begin before the age of 25, and at least 1 in 4 young people experience a mental health condition.
These are alarming statistics, and make it all the more important for us to consistently check in on our young people’s wellbeing and mental health.
Each week, we will explore some of the ways we can best support the children and adolescents in our homes and
school. It is also important to teach and encourage young people to play a key role in looking after their own health. This
‘Weekly Wellbeing’ section will offer tips and information to maintain connection, facilitate conversations and promote
overall health and wellbeing.
Our young people’s wellbeing and mental health is important, as mental health concerns often begin in childhood and
adolescence. Take the time to check in with your children. Simple questions like,
‘What was the best thing that happened at school today?’ or ‘What did you find challenging at school today?’ are
helpful in opening meaningful wellbeing conversations.
Class of the Week YEAR 5
Year 5 have been very busy this term. A significant number of students nominated for SRC which was wonderful to see. They spent their holidays preparing their leadership speech, showcasing the amazing role models in our class. We have also recently held our Public Speaking competition with many of our class making it through to the finals.
It is always impressive to see such confident, young people delivering well-prepared speeches to an audience!
During Mathematics, we have been learning about position and the skills to use and plot coordinates on a Cartesian plane. Students have been busy creating Cartesian plane artwork by designing their drawing and plotting the coordinates, allowing someone else to recreate the image using their coordinates. It has been very challenging, but
Year 5 have been using our GRIT dispositions to get through the task!
