A man has been charged over the alleged grooming of a teenage girl in the state’s northeast.

In August 2021, officers from Oxley Police District Proactive Crime Team commenced an investigation following reports a netball coach was allegedly grooming a 15-year-old girl.

About 3.50pm on Tuesday 28 September 2021, officers executed a search warrant at a home in Tamworth, where police seized a mobile phone and laptop, which underwent forensic examination.

Following further enquiries, a 20-year-old man was arrested at a home in Tamworth about 3.30pm yesterday (Monday 18 October 2021).

He was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with use carriage service to send indecent material to person under 16, and use carriage service-procure under 16 yrs for sexual activity.

The man was granted given conditional bail to appear at Tamworth Local Court on Monday 25 October 2021.

Homicide Squad detectives charge man over alleged murder of Christine Neilan

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man with murder following an investigation into the death of a woman in the state’s north west last year.

Just before 8am on Thursday 9 January 2020, emergency services were called to bushland near Sunflash Street and Black Prince Drive at Lightning Ridge, following the discovery of a woman’s body.

The woman was formally identified as 39-year-old local, Christine Neilan.

A post-mortem examination revealed she died from serious head injuries.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and Central North Police District established Strike Force Bullarook to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

As a part of ongoing investigations, Homicide Squad detectives conducted an extensive search of a property, and surrounding bushland at Lightning Ridge, between last Thursday (14 October 2021) and Sunday (17 October 2021).

Strike Force Bullarook detectives were assisted throughout the search by officers from across Western Region, the Forensic Evidence and Technical Services Command (FETS), the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, Marine Area Command, and the Dog Unit.

Following further extensive inquiries, a 73-year-old man was arrested at a Lightning Ridge property just after 10am yesterday (Monday 19 October 2021).

He was taken to Walgett Police Station and charged with murder.

The Lightning Ridge man has been refused bail and will appear at Walgett Local Court today (Tuesday 19 October 2021).

Shortly after the arrest, Strike Force Bullarook investigators executed a crime scene warrant at the property and surrounds, which will continue today.

Man charged over alleged sexual act – Figtree

A man will re-appear in court next month after being charged over an alleged sexual act on the South Coast over the weekend.

About 1.30pm on Saturday (16 October 2021), the 46-year-old man allegedly approached a teenage girl who was walking on a footpath along Oleander Avenue, Figtree, and carried out a sexual act in front of her.

Police have been told the man was confronted by a member of the public before leaving the scene.

The girl also left the scene before officers from Wollongong Police District arrived on scene.

Following inquiries, police attended an address on Nebo drive, Figtree and located the man.

He was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with carry out sexual act with another without consent, and behave in offensive manner in/near public place.


The man was refused bail and appeared at Wollongong Local Court yesterday (Sunday 17 October 2021), where he was granted strict conditional bail to re-appear at the same court on Tuesday 30 November 2021.

Investigations are continuing into the incident.

Man charged with assaulting store employee after allegedly refusing to wear face mask – Upper Hunter region

A man has been charged after refusing to wear a face mask in-store and allegedly assaulting a store worker in the Upper Hunter region yesterday.

About 4.15pm (Tuesday 19 October 2021), a 30-year-old man was working at a food store on Mayne Street, Murrurundi when a man entered the store without wearing a face mask.

The store employee offered the man a mask, when the man allegedly became verbally aggressive towards the worker and left the store.

A short time later, the man returned to the store and walked behind the counter, before allegedly assaulting the employee repeatedly and attempting to drag him from the store while threatening him.

Customers went to the aid of the injured man, and the man left the scene.

The store employee was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for cuts and bruises to his face and swelling to his left eye, before being taken to Murrurundi Hospital. He has since been released.

Officers from Hunter Valley Police District were called and commenced investigations.

Following inquiries, police attended a home on Rosella Street, Murrurundi, and arrested a 53-year-old man.

He was taken to Muswellbrook Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man was granted conditional bail, to appear at Scone Local Court on 18 November 2021.
