What a night for Armidale

A massive storm cell and tornado ripped through parts of Armidale last night, leaving a huge amount of damage in its wake.

Thankfully, there have been no reports of anyone being seriously injured.

A huge thank you to the SES, Police, Essential Energy, RFS and Fire & Rescue NSW and Armidale Regional Council crews who worked all during the night and are still working, restoring power, removing debris, temporarily repairing roofs and getting people out of their damaged homes to safety.

So far emergency crews have responded to 500 calls for assistance, with the major damage sustained in the North Hill area of Armidale.

At the height of the storm, more than 6,400 customers were without power however this number was reduced to around 3,900 customers by early this morning and by midday today, that number was down to 3,167.

Many businesses are also badly impacted and the University of New England sustained damage to its buildings, with the campus closed today.

A large clean-up operation has been ongoing today between all the response agencies and a detailed impact assessment is also being conducted, pending a disaster declaration.

I’ve been in contact with the Minister for Emergency Services this morning about this and I’ll keep the community updated.

Please stay safe today everyone and look out for each other.

Thank you again to our amazing emergency services personnel! Adam Marshall.
